A simple joke goes too far—an AI-generated post meant to be funny backfires, unraveling your friend’s chance of winning the student council election. Your mission? Travel back in time, rewrite the flow of information, and fix the mistake before it spirals out of control.
ChronoShift: Reality Rewritten is our newest escape room game, centered on the unintended consequences of using AI for fun. Research shows that many young people don’t fully consider the impact of using tools such as generative AI to manipulate images or videos—especially when it’s done as a harmless prank. With generative AI and other technologies and apps making it so easy and enticing, ChronoShift invites players to reflect on what could happen when digital jokes have real-world consequences.
The game was inspired by a workshop in Copenhagen with 14 librarians and educators who had previously localized our original game. Through co-design, we arrived at the goal of creating a playful yet thought-provoking experience that encourages reflection on the ethics of AI-generated content—particularly when it involves fabricating a video of someone doing something they never actually did. The team also wanted to situate the story within an election context, given growing concerns about election-related misinformation across Europe and beyond. To keep the tone approachable, we anchored the narrative in a school setting: a student council race gone sideways.
ChronoShift is a 30-minute, team-based game (for 4–6 players) available in an in-person format only. As with all our Loki’s Loop experiences, we provide everything you need: setup instructions, a facilitator guide, and a debrief discussion tool to help connect gameplay to real-world insight.
