Should the government add a supplement to increase the effectiveness of vitamins and antioxidants into the public water supply? That’s the question of Hydramin-lækket, the Danish adaptation of The Euphorigen Investigation. Developed through a collaboration between the Danish Library Association, the University of Copenhagen, and Loki’s Loop, the game immerses players in a world of manipulated media, deepfake images and video, and social media bots, in the quest to determine whether the supplement is safe or not.
Like all Euphorigen localization projects, the Danish version goes beyond translation. Working through our co-design framework, university students developed three possible storylines, refined them in collaboration with librarians, and ultimately created a narrative tailored to the Danish context.
One of the team’s most important design decisions involved choosing which organizations would fill the game’s key roles. In Hydramin-lækket, a pharmaceutical company serves as the suspicious actor, while an environmental think tank is positioned as the trusted source. These choices were carefully considered to create the kinds of emotional and cognitive tensions that make the game effective. As players investigate the mystery, they encounter phenomena such as confirmation bias, the third-person effect, and the real-world consequences of sharing misinformation before verifying it.
The result is a distinctly Danish experience that uses play to spark reflection and conversation about trust, evidence, and how we make decisions in today’s complex information environment.
